ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — School officials have rejected an appeal filed by the family of a Maryland boy suspended after chewing his breakfast pastry into the shape of a gun.
In an Oct. 9 opinion, the Anne Arundel County Board of Education wrote that staff members at Park Elementary School “acted reasonably and properly” by suspending the then-7-year-old boy last year.
In June, a hearing examiner also affirmed the boy’s suspension, finding that it was based on a history of problems, not the pastry episode some refer to as “the Pop-Tart case.”
The attorney for the boy’s family, Robin Ficker, told The Washington Post (http://wapo.st/1vh1jL8 ) on Wednesday that his parents will now appeal to the Maryland State Board of Education in hopes of getting the incident cleared from his school record.
