WASHINGTON — Volunteer search teams searched parts of Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens in Washington, D.C. on Saturday and are expected to search through the day Sunday, for a missing 8-year-old they insist will not be forgotten.
Rudd was last seen March 1 when she left a D.C. homeless shelter, with shelter superintendent Khalil Tatum, 51.
Two weeks after Relisha was reported missing, the body of Tatum’s wife was found in a motel. Police believe Tatum killed her, though Tatum was later found dead in the park of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. There has been no sign of Rudd in all of these months.
“I think we did very well it was nice to hear that we got the same indiciations — or not indications — as the other teams,” said Julie Jones and her 9-year-old yellow lab Quincy, who came down from Maine as part of a canine search and rescue team. The days’ search however, turned up nothing.
The investigation of Rudd’s disappearance was hindered at first due to conflicting stories from Rudd’s mother and grandmother, who had been living with Rudd at the shelter. The shelter itself — in the former D.C. General Hospital — is also being shut down in the wake of her disappearance, due to poor conditions and safety issues there.
