WASHINGTON — It’s been a year since a local mailman was killed during his route
in Cheverly, Maryland. Now, the Prince George’s County Police Department has
renewed its efforts to find the killer.
On November 23, 2013, postal worker Tyson Barnette was shot multiple times and
died on the job, at the intersection of Jutewood Avenue and Reed Street. He was
26.
On Saturday, county police detectives and postal inspectors revisited the
neighborhood to speak with residents and distribute flyers about the murder.
Last month, police released surveillance video of a black Jeep Grand Cherokee in
relation to the case.
“The SUV was
[of the murder] about the same time that we’ve estimated the time of the murder,
and it was ,” says Tom Ouellette, a spokesman with the U.S. Postal Inspection
Service.
Cheverly native Delores Wright says she heard the shots. The entire neighborhood
was shocked by the murder. “I didn’t pay attention until my neighbor across the
street called and asked if I heard the shots,” says Wright, 76.
“I hope they find him,” Wright continues. “Whoever did it needs to be punished
because [the mailman] seemed like an awfully nice young man.”
Ouellette says the $125,000 reward still stands. The Postal Inspection Service
is offering $100,000 and Prince George’s County Crime Solvers is offering
$25,000.
