WASHINGTON 鈥 The nightly dinner table battle is no stranger to any parent.
鈥淭wo more bites of broccoli, and then you can be excused.鈥 Or, 鈥淚f you want a brownie, you need to eat your beans.鈥 Then there鈥檚 the, 鈥淵ou didn鈥檛 eat anything; you have to eat something!鈥
Sound familiar? (Yeah, me too.) These are the scenarios that sociologist hears all the time, and all this fighting over food is stressing families out. That is why Rose said it鈥檚 time for parents to take a different approach when it comes to feeding kids 鈥 and especially when it comes to pushing the peas (and carrots and kale). 听
鈥淲e are so programmed to believe that nutrition is what we need to talk about with our kids and we need to think about nutrition when we鈥檙e planning our meals, but the truth is that we can inadvertently make a lot of mistakes in teaching habits when we think about nutrition first,鈥 said Rose, author of 听
鈥淭he nutrition mindset makes us vulnerable to the idea of feeding the same few foods over and over again, as long as they have the right nutrients or enough of the right nutrients. We end up in a situation where parents feed their kids a very restricted, monotonous diet, and then wonder why their children are so opposed to eating a wider variety or why they鈥檙e so resistant, or why they find it so difficult.鈥
Rather than approaching mealtime like it鈥檚 just part of the schedule or a chore, Rose said to think about eating more like a lesson. Similar to reading or riding a bike, it鈥檚 something that鈥檚 learned, which means it takes time, repetition, reinforcement and patience.
Here are some of her top tips for raising a healthy eater:
It鈥檚 all about proportion, variety and moderation
Instead of worrying if your child has met a nutritional quota for the day, (Did he eat all his fruit? Check. Leafy greens? Check. Fiber? Protein?) think bigger picture. Exposing kids to a variety of foods early on and teaching them to recognize when they鈥檙e full and no longer hungry will serve them better in the long run than forcing those last 鈥渢wo bites鈥 of broccoli.
Rose said with this approach, 鈥淭he nutrition will come along.鈥
Institute a 鈥榬otation rule鈥
One way to teach variety is to not serve the same food two days in a row for meal or snack.
鈥淎nd say to your kid, 鈥榃e鈥檙e not going to have the cheese stick for snack today because we had it yesterday.鈥 But then you have to add, 鈥楤ut we can have it again tomorrow if you still want it,鈥欌 Rose said.
That last caveat lets the child know the food isn鈥檛 being taken away from them, completely. The next day, ask if they still want that cheese stick or if they want something else. Rose said offering choices gives a sense of power to the child, while also teaching them to eat a variety of foods.
Smaller portions
A common mistake is to pile fruits, veggies, whole grains and lean proteins on the plate. Rose said this can actually do more harm than good when it comes to healthy eating.
鈥淚f they see a whole mound of food, that can make them back off and not eat any of it,鈥 she said.
Plus, it鈥檚 hard to know how hungry kids are when they come to the table. Maybe they had a big after-school snack; maybe they鈥檙e just having an off day. Forcing large portions could lead to overeating.
Instead, Rose recommends putting two to three bites of each of the different items on the plate.
The one-one rule
If the chicken or pasta that you are serving is your child鈥檚 favorite, it鈥檚 natural for him to want to eat all of that first 鈥 sometimes even getting full before trying the other things on the plate.
That is why Rose recommends a 鈥渙ne-one鈥 rule. Teach your child to take a bite of one thing, then another, then another, going around the plate.
鈥淎nd the message that we want to teach them 鈥 and we have to say it out loud, we can鈥檛 just hope that they鈥檒l intuit it 鈥 you need to eat a little bit of everything because you never know when you鈥檙e going to be full.
If they鈥檝e eaten a little bit of everything and still want a second helping of one item, go for it.
Don鈥檛 beat yourself up
Every parent wants his or her child to eat healthy, and everyone is trying. Instilling good eating habits is exactly that 鈥 a habit. Some dinners are great, some are not, but it鈥檚 the bigger picture that counts. Think of teaching eating just like you think of teaching manners. Enforce please and thank you, and enforce variety and proportion.
鈥淓veryone can learn to eat better than they鈥檙e currently eating. We just have to think about the world through (the child鈥檚) eyes and ask ourselves, 鈥榃hat does this child need in order to learn the skill?鈥欌 Rose said.
鈥淎nd it鈥檚 just like if they couldn鈥檛 read or couldn鈥檛 walk, we wouldn鈥檛 just assume that we could pressure them into reading or walking. We would assume we needed to find out what was stopping them and then teach them, and that鈥檚 the same thing with food.鈥
Her best piece of advice is to think about the way you want your child would eat when that child is all grown up.
鈥淎nd feed them that way now, or at least feed them in a way that鈥檚 consistent with that. Because we can鈥檛 feed kids one way when they鈥檙e little and expect them to grow up and eat another way,鈥 she said.
鈥淧arents need to remember that every time they feed their kids, they are shaping their kids鈥 taste preferences. Find out what your kids like 鈥 you need to remember you鈥檙e shaping it with every meal, every snack, every drink, and start shaping it in the direction you want to go.鈥
