WASHINGTON — Ahead of the pope鈥檚 scheduled visit to Congress next week, eager constituents are hoping to snag one of the limited tickets given to each member to see the pontiff speak in person.
Pope Francis arrives 4 p.m. Tuesday. He will address Congress on Thursday before he leaves town.
On Friday, there was a drawing to see who from Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton鈥檚 constituency will see the pope鈥檚 speech. Eligible names were written on tiny pieces of paper.
鈥淭hese are standing room only tickets,鈥 Holmes Norton said. 鈥淭hat means people have to stand very early in the morning before they even get in the sight of the pope.鈥
Norton鈥檚 office has 85 tickets to hand out. Archbishop Carroll High School senior Patricia Gomez drew the names during Friday鈥檚 lottery.
鈥淚’m already going to Andrews Air Force Base,鈥 she said. 鈥淪o now that I get to go to the Mass, it’s really exciting.鈥
Gomez was chosen by her school to do the drawing. She will get two tickets to see the pope address Congress.
