US defeats Netherlands 2-0, clinching 4th Women’s World Cup title

The U.S. women’s soccer team beat the Netherlands 2-0 in Lyon, France, Sunday, winning their fourth World Cup title.

After a scoreless first half, U.S. Captain Megan Rapinoe scored first–her 50th career goal on a penalty kick. Moments later, Rose Lavelle, of the Washington Spirit, scored to give the U.S. a 2-0 lead in the second half as the Americans went on to win back-to-back titles.

Rapinoe and Lavelle were both dealing with hamstring issues, but were in the starting lineup.

The Netherlands were trying to win their first World Cup.

The U.S. completed a string of victories over highly ranked European opponents, Sweden, Spain, France, England and now the Dutch.
