WASHINGTON — Virginia鈥檚 House of Delegates has passed a bill that would regulate and provide rules for tax collection on short-term room or house rentals through apps or websites like AirBnB.
House Bill 812 was approved Thursday on a 75-22 vote.
The bill sponsor, Del. Chris Peace (R-Mechanicsville), compares the proposal to the new regulations implemented last year to allow transportation network companies like Uber and Lyft to operate in Virginia.
A similar bill in the Senate sponsored by Northern Virginia senators Jill Holtzman Vogel (R-Upperville) and Adam Ebbin (D-Alexandria) was approved by the General Laws and Technology Committee on Jan. 25, but has not been taken up yet by the Senate Finance Committee.
