Va. woman dies after I-66 crash in Fauquier Co.

WASHINGTON — A woman died Wednesday after a crash with a box truck on Interstate 66 in Fauquier County, Virginia, the state police said.

A Ford Focus and a Ford F-350 pickup truck with a trailer were both stopped on the right shoulder of westbound I-66, the Virginia State Police said. The pickup truck had pulled over because its trailer had blown a tire; it is unclear why the Focus was on the shoulder, state police said. The Focus then started reversing down the shoulder, but somehow drifted into the westbound travel lane.

That’s when a box truck hit the car from the back, causing it to slam into a guardrail off the right shoulder. The box truck also struck the pickup truck and then overturned on the roadway.

The Ford Focus driver was flown to a hospital where she later died. The Virginia State Police have identified her as Judy C. Ravenscroft, 52, of Berryville, Virginia. She had been wearing a seat belt, state police said.

The box truck driver, a 55-year-old Dumfries man, had minor injuries and was treated at the scene. No one in the pickup truck was injured, the police said.

The crash closed down a part of I-66 between Haymarket and The Plains from around 8:15 a.m. to 11 a.m.
