The Macy’s in downtown D.C. will start selling secondhand clothing in a partnership with tech retailer ThredUp. It may be the first time in the history of the department store located at 12th and G streets NW near Metro Center that a used item has crossed the sales desk.
The store, which was a Hecht’s from 1985 to 2006 and Macy’s since then, is one of several Northeast stores that are piloting a partnership between the legacy department store and the San Francisco online reseller. It began as an online-only platform for individuals to sell their used clothing and has grown into a juggernaut, with 100 million pieces of secondhand clothing having passed through its system.
The ThredUp shop in D.C. is expected to open by the end of August, according to a Macy’s spokeswoman.
And we could be seeing a lot more ThredUp secondhand sales in new places. With $175 million in fresh funding, the San Francisco resale retailer, which already has three small brick-and-mortar stores, is ready to grow.
