Residents, visitors capture images of destruction in Hurricane Irma’s aftermath

WASHINGTON — As Caribbean islands begin to take stock of damage left by , residents and visitors are sharing images of the aftermath.

On St. John, a restaurant’s executive chef shared video on of the devastation left after the storm barreled through. His video shows restaurant in ruins, with the kitchen upended and extensive structural damage. (Click to watch below)

On Wednesday morning, a was streaming images from the Soggy Dollar Bar on Jost Van Dyke, British Virgin Islands. Around 8:30 a.m., that camera went out — leaving viewers with a suspended view of increasing winds blowing palm fronds and growing waves against a darkening sky.

That webcam is not yet back in service, but on the , someone posted an reading, “Well it’s not gone… completely.” The image used in the Facebook post is cropped from a tweet showing a medical rescue.

on St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands, did have working earlier this week. Both stopped relaying images from the bar and beach. In a , the bar said that many trees and power lines were down and shared an image of boats that had not been fully secured before the hurricane struck.
