It鈥檚 a D.C. monument that could be deemed 鈥渙bscure鈥� on name alone.
In today鈥檚 edition of 鈥淢att About Town,鈥� 草莓传媒鈥檚 Matt Kaufax heads to M Street Northwest to learn about the patriotic and prayerful story behind the 鈥淣uns of the Battlefield” Memorial.
The monument commemorates the service of Irish Catholic nuns who worked on the battlefield as nurses during the American Civil War, and was erected just before WWI, at a time when the patriotism of Irish Americans was questioned.
It served in part as a statement of loyalty and support for troops, but the story took an interesting turn when fiery Irish Catholic artist Jerome Connor (selected to build the statue), clashed with his benefactors and the Commission of Fine Arts.
