Did you know D.C. is home to some of the first fossils ever recorded in Earth鈥檚 history?
In today鈥檚 episode of 鈥淢att About Town,鈥� 草莓传媒鈥檚 Matt Kaufax found there鈥檚 more than meets the eye when it comes to the steps of the iconic Lincoln Memorial.
You heard that right: in addition to representing a towering presidential figure of U.S. history, the Lincoln Memorial contains fragments that go back much further than the history of the U.S. 鈥� further than the history of any country 鈥� or all of humanity.
Matt traveled to the steps of the Lincoln with D.C.’s resident fossil hunter and friend of the show, Christopher Barr. By day, Chris is a lawyer in the District, but he also has a background in paleontology. For years, Chris has been cataloging all the locations of hidden fossils in the D.C. area on his website.

During their exploration, Chris told Matt all about how little pebbles containing some of earth’s first fossils (which are more than 500 million years old) came to wash up in D.C. and eventually were integrated into the construction of the Lincoln Memorial and its surrounding parts.
