鈥淚 am eligible for food stamps, but my food stamps don’t last a month,鈥 retiree Brenda Hayes told 草莓传媒 after she drove through the giveaway line.
Items included turkey, fresh vegetables and other staples to help ease the financial strain to keep food on the table.
Prince George鈥檚 County鈥檚 Office of Community Relations Director Euniesha Davis said the COVID-19 pandemic hit residents hard. Eventually, things started getting better, 鈥渂ut then with the inflation coming up, and just other costs and other things of life that come up, now you’re seeing more people say 鈥榟ey, I need help, too,鈥欌 Davis said.
Victor Flores also waited in the long line. He told 草莓传媒 the turkey and other fixings are helpful for his family.
鈥淲e got a big turkey. I guess we鈥檒l have a good Thanksgiving, now,鈥 Flores said.
鈥淭his effort here is around addressing food insecurity,鈥 said Landis Rush, UnitedHealthcare national vice president, Public Sector and Labor. He told 草莓传媒 that UnitedHealthcare purchased turkeys for the Stuff-A-Truck giveaway, but the behind-the-scenes work of securing them was a challenge due to inflation and the ongoing shortage.
鈥淣ot only have costs gone up per turkey, but you’re also dealing with the issue of bird flu 鈥 it鈥檚 been tough to get turkeys. We were fortunate this year to do it,鈥 Rush said.
Meanwhile, Brenda Davis said she sees the giveaway as a blessing and plans to pay it forward.
鈥淚’m going to share some of this food with my neighbors in need,鈥 she said.
