1 child remains in hospital after Md. boat explosion

WASHINGTON – One victim remains in the hospital after a boat explosion over the Memorial Weekend that happened on the South River in Anne Arundel County, Md.

A 9-year-old boy is at Johns Hopkins Hospital in stable condition.

The other five children and two adults, Sonia Villafeurter, 34 , and Gladys Miranda, 31, have been released.

EDGEWATER, Md. — Anne Arundel County fire officials say seven people were injured Monday after an explosion and fire on a boat in the South River near Edgewater, Md.

Lt. Jack Beall tells ²ÝÝ®´«Ã½ most of the victims are children.

It happened about noon Monday at the Oak Grove Marina. Fire Department Division Chief Keith Swindle says the 32-foot pleasure boat had just refueled when the engine stalled. He said while someone was trying to restart the engine, an explosion and flash fire occurred.

Beall says two 9-year-olds, a girl and a boy, were both taken to the burn center at Johns Hopkins Bayview with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

A 13-year-old girl was taken by ambulance to Johns Hopkins with non-life-threatening injuries.

Four more people, a 9-year-old boy, a 12-year-old girl, a 13-year-old girl and a 31-year-old woman were taken to Anne Arundel Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Department of Natural Resources is investigating the explosion.
